Keep sensitive information private

Prepare a factual timeline and explain the issues you want assessed. Keep children’s details, addresses, financial records and personal communications out of public comments. Ask the office how confidential documents should be shared.

If there are existing proceedings, notices, agreements or orders, disclose them at the start. The advocate needs the complete procedural background rather than only the latest disagreement.

Identify practical questions

List questions about the process, required documents and next steps. Where financial issues are relevant, organise the records available to you without making assumptions about entitlements or outcomes.

Family-law requirements depend on the facts and applicable law. The checklist does not determine jurisdiction, timelines, maintenance, custody or eligibility for any relief. Any urgent safety concern or imminent court date requires prompt individual assistance.

Records to organise

  • Relevant family or marriage records available to you.
  • Existing notices, petitions, agreements and orders.
  • A dated factual timeline.
  • Relevant financial or child-related documents where applicable, shared privately.

Bring copies for discussion and keep originals secure. This is a preparation list, not an exhaustive statutory filing checklist.

Common questions

Should I post personal details in the Q&A section?

No. Use a private channel agreed with the office for sensitive information.

Does this guide set a case timeline?

No. Timelines depend on the facts, procedure and court schedule.
