Bring the complete version

Collect the whole proposed agreement, including schedules, annexures and referenced documents. Identify which version is current and whether anything has already been signed. Explain the purpose of the arrangement and the roles of the parties.

Write down the terms you believe have been agreed, especially payment, delivery, duration and responsibilities. Highlight any provision you do not understand rather than relying on informal assurances.

Ask questions before execution

Discuss authority to sign, obligations, termination, dispute provisions and any document-specific formalities with the reviewing advocate. Requirements such as stamping or registration depend on the document and applicable law.

Keep a copy of the final agreed version and execution records. This guide does not provide a template or certify that a contract is enforceable. Review should be based on the actual document and the surrounding facts.

Records to organise

  • Complete draft with annexures and schedules.
  • Relevant offers, emails and agreed terms.
  • Details of the parties and authority to sign.
  • Earlier agreements or signed versions, if any.

Bring copies for discussion and keep originals secure. This is a preparation list, not an exhaustive statutory filing checklist.

Common questions

Is a downloaded template enough?

A template may not fit the transaction. Have the actual terms and formalities assessed.

Should I share only the clause I dislike?

Provide the complete agreement so that related provisions and definitions can be considered.
