Separate the facts from the requested result
Explain what happened, who is involved and what you would like the advocate to assess. Identify any immediate concern such as an upcoming hearing, a threatened transaction or a demand for payment. Do not assume every dispute requires the same forum or remedy.
If proceedings already exist, collect the case reference, pleadings and orders that you have. The stage of the case and existing directions can change what the next step should be.
Make the file easy to review
Group documents by type and then by date. Keep a simple index describing what each document is and whether the original is available. Mention records held by another person rather than silently leaving a gap.
Preserve emails and messages in their original form where possible. An advocate may need further material, verification or copies from an official source. This preparation file does not determine admissibility, jurisdiction or the merits of a claim.
Records to organise
- Chronology and names of all involved parties.
- Contracts, deeds, invoices or other foundational records.
- Notices, replies and dated correspondence.
- Existing pleadings, orders and case details, if any.
Bring copies for discussion and keep originals secure. This is a preparation list, not an exhaustive statutory filing checklist.
Common questions
Will every document be used in court?
Not necessarily. Relevance, proof and procedural requirements need individual assessment.
Can I estimate the outcome from this checklist?
No. It organises information and does not predict the result of a case.
