Supreme Court Directs ₹10 Lakh Interest Payment in Aruna Sugars Higher School Case

The Supreme Court of India has directed the payment of a lump-sum amount of ₹10 lakh towards interest in the case involving Aruna Sugars Higher School. The amount must be paid within eight weeks.

The order was passed on 4 May 2026 in The Aruna Sugars Higher School v. The Joint Director of School Education & Another, in Special Leave Petition (Civil) Nos. 27140–27141 of 2023.

What Did the Supreme Court Order?

The Supreme Court recorded that interest had already been paid at the rate of 6% per annum. However, considering the facts and circumstances of the dispute, the Court held that the controversy could be brought to an end by directing payment of a lump-sum amount of ₹10,00,000 towards interest.

The Court ordered that the amount must be paid within a period of eight weeks.

Case Arose from Madras High Court Judgment

The Special Leave Petitions arose from the judgment dated 7 March 2023 passed by the Madras High Court in Writ Appeal Nos. 1231 and 1232 of 2016.

Aruna Sugars Higher School approached the Supreme Court challenging the Madras High Court’s decision. After hearing the advocates appearing for both sides, the Supreme Court issued the payment direction and disposed of the Special Leave Petitions.

Pending Civil Suit Will Not Be Affected

The Supreme Court specifically clarified that its order would not adversely affect any pending civil suit between the parties.

This clarification means that the ₹10 lakh interest direction and disposal of the Special Leave Petitions will not automatically decide the rights or claims involved in any separate civil proceedings.

Any pending civil suit must therefore be decided independently by the competent court based on the pleadings, evidence and applicable law.

Litigation Expenses to Be Released

The Supreme Court also directed that the amount kept in a fixed deposit towards litigation expenses must be paid to the respondent after the respondent provides the required bank account details.

Following these directions, the Special Leave Petitions were disposed of. All pending applications connected with the case were also disposed of.

Important Highlights of the Supreme Court Order

  • Interest had already been paid at 6% per annum.
  • The Supreme Court fixed ₹10 lakh as lump-sum interest.
  • The amount must be paid within eight weeks.
  • The order will not affect any pending civil suit.
  • Litigation expenses kept in fixed deposit must be released to the respondent.
  • The Special Leave Petitions and pending applications were disposed of.

Is the ₹10 Lakh Direction Applicable to Every Similar Case?

No. The Supreme Court passed the ₹10 lakh interest direction based on the particular facts and circumstances of this case.

The order does not create a general rule that ₹10 lakh must be awarded in every school management, education department, employment or monetary dispute.

The amount appears to have been fixed as a practical, case-specific measure to bring the controversy before the Supreme Court to an end.

Why Is the Eight-Week Deadline Important?

A party directed by a court to make payment within a specified period is expected to comply within that deadline.

If the payment is not made within eight weeks, the person entitled to receive the amount may have to consider appropriate legal remedies for enforcement, depending on the circumstances and the exact terms of the order.

The parties should preserve copies of the Supreme Court order, payment records, bank details and all communications concerning compliance.

Legal Significance of the Order

The order demonstrates that the Supreme Court may adopt a practical monetary solution to conclude prolonged litigation where the facts justify such an approach.

At the same time, the Court protected the parties’ rights in other proceedings by expressly stating that the order would not adversely affect any pending civil suit.

This distinction is legally important because disposal of a Special Leave Petition on a limited monetary direction does not necessarily amount to a final decision on every underlying civil dispute.

The decision is significant as a case-specific example of the Supreme Court using a practical monetary direction to conclude litigation while preserving the parties’ rights in separate proceedings.
